Therapy
Let's find a way to infuse your life with more intention...
The recipe for a well-lived life has just a few ingredients but a rather complex set of instructions. Following those instructions requires close attention and care--that's where intentional design enters the picture. Since 2001, I've helped communities, business, groups, couples, and individuals design lives filled with intentional practices--where actions match values.
As a committed, passionate psychologist and professor in Blacksburg, Virginia, your well-lived life is my priority.

A Bit About Therapy
Personalized Attention For All Your Needs
Perhaps you're down or anxious - maybe you're unsure about the future of a relationship, or just feel that you aren't living the life you were meant to lead. Whatever your needs may be, I am here to offer support. Psychotherapy is a process of growth and self-discovery, and in my work, I promote behavioral transformation by understanding what drives behavior, the role of patterns, and the adoption of new attitudes and reactions. I have the tools and professional experience to help you get back on track.
I have been fortunate to work with a diverse sample of people, including members of the LGBT community, individuals with intellectual disabilities, and members of the military. My clients have a variety of concerns, including relationship problems, depression, anxiety, addictive and compulsive behaviors, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other health concerns. I also provide sexual health, premarital, and pre-partnering counseling.
More About Me
Credentials
I received my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in human sexuality from the University of Kansas in 2007. Afterward I completed my internship at Dwight D. Eisenhower Veterans Administration Medical Center in Leavenworth, Kansas, where I worked with military veterans and their families. I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. I am also PSYPACT Authorized - Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT), which means that I can see clients for therapy in several different states.
Professorship
Prior to working as a professor, I worked as a researcher on a grant funded by the Department of Labor that sought to examine the job-seeking and job-maintenance strategies of individuals with disabilities. My current research is in the areas of human sexuality, the impact of behavior on public policy, and conflict in close relationships.
Clinical Practice
I maintain a busy private practice for therapy in Blacksburg, Virginia, where I work with clients and couples regarding issues related to substance abuse, trauma, sexual identity, and other life concerns.
My approach is called "integrative" with an emphasis on psychodynamic theory. This approach is tailored toward the needs of each client; however, emphasis is placed on early relationship experiences and how these patterns are continued in our adult life. I use a variety of techniques in therapy to find what will work best for each client, including dialogue, interpretation, cognitive behavior therapy, self-monitoring experiments, visualization, journal-keeping, drawing, and reading books.
Business Consultation
Since 2008 I have worked with organizations ranging from small mom and pop shops to large corporations to help them increase productivity, boost employee satisfaction, and improve personnel selection. I would be happy to partner with you to find ways to help your business or organization operate at an optimal level.
